The Bodie Hodges Foundation - GNR Challenge - September 2017

I’ve been contacted by Paul Hodges from the Bodie Hodges Foundation, a charity which was set up in honour of Bodie who passed away aged 10 months old after a tragic choking accident. Bodie’s parents signed him up to the Organ Donation Register and his organs went on to save the lives of 4 other children as a result.

The Foundation has raised the funds to buy and now run a holiday home, Bodie’s Boathouse, to support families that have been bereaved of a child but we are also passionate about raising awareness of organ donation and getting more people to sign up to the register.

The event the Foundation is planning relates to the Great North Run Challenge. Over the last 2 years they have received a huge amount of support from the Great North Run(GNR) and the BBC and the video at the link here, was made by the BBC to help tell our story.

What they would like to do this year is take a baton made to promote Organ Donation from Bodie’s Boathouse in Stamford, to the start of Hadrian’s Wall, then along the wall to Newcastle and then for it to be taken on the GNR. This will all take place between 1st – 10th September.

The bit the Foundation would like our help with would be from Stamford to the start of the wall in Barrow in Furness. This is a journey of around 230 miles and would need to be completed over 3 days between the 1st – 3rd September.

The Foundation are looking for a group of transplant cyclists to cover this distance or possibly to relay between hospitals on the route.

Planning is in the early stages so details of route, motor support etc. are as yet undecided but if anybody is interested in participating as a rider or as an organiser of this section of the challenge, please let me know (richard.smith@mamilcycling.co.uk) and I can put you in touch with Paul.

Not a recipient of a transplant to date but more than happy to help in any capacity.
