The Great Britain Transplant Cycling Team has completed final preparations for the forthcoming World Transplant Games following a training session at the Stourport circuit.
The 22nd edition of the World Transplant Games will be held between 17th -24th August 2019 in Newcastle Gateshead and is set to attract 2500 competitors from over 60 countries. After the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, it’s now one of the largest international multisport events in the world.
The competition is open to recipients of life supporting organ transplants, notably liver, heart, lung, kidney, pancreas and bone marrow between 4 - 80 years of age.
The principle aim of the games is to raise public awareness of the importance and benefits of organ donation by demonstrating the health and fitness that can be achieved post-transplant. Equally, it aims to encourage all recipients to remain fit and healthy post-transplant. As a cycling team, we do this by racing bikes!

As the Great Britain Transplant Cycling team, we have our largest number of riders ever for our first home games since 1995 – 32 in total, with 10 women and 22 men (including 3 junior competitors) aged between 14 and 70 with either heart, liver, kidney or bone marrow transplants.
We will compete in 3 events, a 10km individual time trial and a 20km team time trial on Monday 19th August held on the Quayside in Newcastle and a 30km road race on Tuesday 20th at Hetton Lyons Country Park.

We have some titles to defend this year with gold medalists in both the individual time trial and road race from the last games in Malaga 2017, notably our captain Ottilie Quince, Di Higman, Su Tarling and coach Rich Smith. We also have some exciting new riders for this year’s event and some who have progressed from the junior ranks to the senior team.
Our aim is to raise awareness of organ donation and demonstrate the success of transplantation by racing as hard as we can. Keep an eye out for us – there’s rarely a dull moment! Come and see us race in Newcastle if you can and give us a follow on Twitter @GBTxCyclists.
